Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes also known as Culicidae

Mosquitoes are small flying insects, and they are experts in finding people and bite them and infect millions of people all over the world.

Mosquitoes causes many diseases like malaria, dengue, yellow fever etc., Mosquitoes causes viral diseases and they can transmit diseases from one person to another. Due to this, over one million people worldwide die from mosquito-borne diseases every year.

Adults have a narrow, oval-shaped body, long legs, and a single pair of wings. Most mosquitoes are brown or black, with or without white markings; their exact color is species-specific. Females use their piercing mouth-parts to puncture the skin of people or animals and feed on the blood required to develop viable eggs. Both males and females use their piercing mouth-parts to feed on plant nectar which is their primary food source

Mosquitoes goes through four separate and distinct stages of its life cycle: Egg, Larva, Pupa, and Adult, here is summary of each stage:

1.
Egg: Eggs are laid one at a time and are attached together to form rafts. These rafts can contain up to 200 eggs and float on the surface of the water. Most eggs hatch into larvae within 48 hours; others might withstand subzero winters before hatching.

2.
Larva: Most larvae hang upside down on the surface of the water and have tubes for breathing and attach to plants to obtain their air supply. Larvae shed (molt) their skins four times, growing larger after each molt.

3.
Pupa: The pupae are mobile responding to light changes and moving their tails towards the bottom but this is the resting and non-feeding stage of development. When development is complete, the pupal skin splits and the adult mosquito emerges.

4.
Adult: The adult rests on the surface of the water for a short time to allow its body parts to harden. Then the adult crawls out of the water to prepare its wings and allow them to dry properly before they can fly. Blood feeding and mating do not occur for a couple of days after the adults emerge. Female mosquitos will live up to weeks while the males will die shortly after they mate.
