Termites

Termites also known as White Ants. The infraorder Isoptera, or epifamily Termintoidae within the order Blatodea.

Termites are small insects that live in colonies and have distinct castes (eusocial) and feed on wood or other dead plant matter.

The large colonies of Termites are what explains the damage done to wood structures and homes.

Termites eat consistently creating tunnels in wood products in order to find cellulose.

Cellulose is an organic aggregate found in wood, paper, cloth, and cardboard. All Termite species consume wood for cellulose, they also use wood to create galleries for harborage. Their consistent need to eat will also become the colony's downfall.

About 45 different Termite species are found in the United States. Of the 45 different species there are three types of Termites, Subterranean termite-drywood termites- and dampwood termites. Depending on the region and climate conditions these termites may require humid environments.

The three(3) types of Termites and most common found in the state of Florida:

  • Subterranean Termites

The most common type is found in North America. They measure about 3/8 of an inch with a dark brown or black color They can be confused with flying ants. To better understand a few physical characteristics that distinguish one from the other is their

Weist- Antennaes- Wings- and color.

Subterranean Termites live mostly in the eastern part of the United States. They need moisture to survive and build their nests in moist soil especially near damp wood. These Termites look for a high level of humidity, to survive they need a reliable food source, water and warmth.

Signs of infestations can be hard to find, like other wood destroying organisms’ subterranean termites can be hard to find. Not only are they small but tend to stay hidden, they also do their damage from the inside out.

Luckily there are some visible to look for that could indicate an infestation. The ability to recognize evidence could be the difference between spending or saving thousands of dollars.

  • Drywood Termites

Drywood termites are a termite species known for thriving in hard, dry wood found mostly inside a home. This includes structural timbers as well as furniture, picture frames, and banisters among other things.

  • Dampwood Termites

Dampwood termites infest wood with high moisture content as the implies. Also, Dampwood termites are noticeably larger than subterranean termites and live in damp and rotting wood and mulch.
